M2: Typography

This module we were tasks with designing a map of Florida displaying major cities, swamps and rivers using proper cartographic elements and typographic principles. The majority of the lab involved placing and editing labels through the label property panel. If further editing was required than the convert to annotation tool was used. These annotation could be edited and warped as needed using the move and edit vertices tools. In addition, a requirement was to make three edits of our own to the map in an effort to develop our individual cartographic styles. I made many edits but the larger ones were changing the the symbology of the state capital as a yellow star which can be intuitively identified as a capital. I removed all cities and rivers that didn't require labels to reduce map clutter and I changed the color scheme of the Swamp and County layers so that the river labels were more easily visible.

M1 Lab: Map Critique

This modules lesson topic was the history of cartography and appropriate map design principles. The lab for this module involved looking through many maps to find one well-designed map and one poorly-designed maps in an effort to develop our own individual cartographic design styles that align with the design principles. My two maps and evaluation are as follows. Map Evaluation Template   Well-designed map:   Synopsis: This map shows the six Wildlife Management Area Game Zones in South Carolina. It can be used Wildlife management professionals or hunters. I think the data to ink ratio has been nearly maximized. The zones being numbered outside the legend is redundant but makes the map easier to read at a glance. There is nothing misleading, the data is substantial, and clutter is minimized to the essentials. For these reasons I think this is a well-designed map.   Answer the following questions for the well-designed map: General ▪         What is the purpose (subst

About Me

Hello all, My name is Michael Malone. I am new to the GIS Admin graduate program, I just started in January. I have a GIS certificate and have a year of experience working as a GIS Technician. Currently I am employed by Orbital Engineering Inc. as a Utility Lead. My main job is assisting in communication between my company and electric utility companies as we work through designs. I am pursuing this program with the hopes of furthering my career. Here's a story map about some of the places I lived/worked during my time as a GIS Technician: https://arcg.is/1nmL4T
